Travelling South

No one got up early today. The bonfire was still smoking in a way that was very pleasing in England and would have been downright terrifying in Australia.

After prevaricating for days, we finally decided that the distance to our next stop was too large to squeeze into one day, so we decided to leave Moor End and get half way to Wales today. We were very sad to leave Marian, Andrew, Squeaky and Buster and didn't manage to actually depart until 12.

We took a detour to look at Wastwater, the deepest lake in the UK and its surrounding Fells, including the impressive scree slopes on the eastern edge.

The weather was perfect.

We drove up the Esk Valley, over Burker Fell and through Newbury Bridge on our way out of the Lakes, which gave us brilliant views across the tops including Scar Fell Pike, the highest point in England.

We drove for the rest of the day and stopped at a Premier Inn by the motorway at Warrington (just South of Liverpool). Dinner was at an Indian restaurant in town incongruously located in a Tudor cottage that once housed Oliver Cromwell. We had a good time - Oliver would have disapproved.
