Alnwick to Edinburgh

The weather has finally started to get properly wintry. It's not too cold yet, but the higher humidity means more impressive frosts. After packing the car we scraped the ice off the windows and then moved it into the sun for a while before heading off.

It was only a short drive to Alnwick castle where the size of the car parks suggests that in warmer months it must be very busy. The castle itself was closed but we could walk around the gardens.

And even go skating.

There are mazes and fountains scattered all over the place.

And a tree house restaurant bigger than the trees it sits in.

But we chose to walk through the town to find a tea room for lunch before heading north.

On the border between England and Scotland we found Berwick, which has very impressive fortifications from the Elizabethan times. Thomas took the tourist map and guided us around a brisk walk of his devising. It had to be brisk because of the cold wind that buffeted us when we climbed the ramparts.

Then off to Edinburgh.
