A wonderous day

Mike drove us around today - which was great as we're still very jetlagged. The first stop was Stonehenge - one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. There's a new visitor center over the hill from the stones and you can walk across the landscape - barrows, strange ridges and the like - and let the stones creep up on you.

A cold wind was blowing over the plain but the sky was blue and we hardly noticed.

We weren't sure whether to go to Winchester or Salisbury Cathedral next. Thomas chose Salisbury as it has the taller spire. In fact he remembers if from a book about the 7 wonders of the Medieval world.

The Cathedral was big, tall and impressive. We were lucky to walk in just as a guided tour was about to start and spent over an hour being led around by Rob who clearly loved the building, its history, construction and quirks.

Thomas even got to do the daily water table test to make sure that the cathedral  wasn't going to fall down. We were all relieved to see the water on the stick when Thomas pulled it out.

We had a fairly quick trip back to Oxford and then walked down to the Ploughman Inn for dinner.
